Why doesn't South Africa have one school calendar?
Each of the nine provinces runs its own education department. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) publishes term dates for public institutions in Cape Town and the surrounding province. Private academies, Model C establishments, and independent institutions often follow different calendars: some start a week earlier, others end a week later.
The dates below are the WCED public school terms for 2026. If your child attends a private institution, confirm directly with the school. If you are planning a family holiday around academic breaks, these dates are the safest bet for the majority of Cape Town families.

The public holidays that matter most for school breaks
Three public holidays in 2026 fall inside term time and create long weekends if you plan around them. Two others fall inside the holidays and affect nothing.
Friday 3 April 2026: Good Friday, Falls in the Term 1-2 break. Many families already off. No extra day needed.
Monday 6 April 2026: Family Day, Also in the break. Combined with Good Friday, this gives a full four-day weekend for anyone whose institution ends Term 1 on 20 March. Most do.
Monday 27 April 2026: Freedom Day, Falls in Term 2. This is a Monday. Classes are closed. One day off, but it does not create a long weekend unless your institution takes the Friday before or Tuesday after.
Wednesday 16 December 2026: Day of Reconciliation, Falls in Term 4. Classes are closed on the Wednesday. Some institutions close the entire week between 16 December and the end of term on 9 December. Others do not. Check your calendar.
Friday 25 December 2026 and Saturday 26 December 2026, Christmas and Day of Goodwill. Both fall in the summer holidays. No effect on academic days.
When are the Cape Town school holiday blocks in 2026?
The longest continuous break is the summer holiday: 10 December 2026 to roughly 12 January 2027 (depending on the 2027 term start). That is about five weeks.
The winter break (Term 2-3) runs from 19 June to 13 July 2026: about three and a half weeks.
The autumn break (Term 1-2) runs from 20 March to 7 April 2026: about two and a half weeks.
The spring break (Term 3-4) runs from 25 September to 6 October 2026: about one and a half weeks.
Do Cape Town school holidays affect remote workers and expats?
Remote workers and international families often assume the academic calendar matches their home country's. It does not.
If you work from Cape Town for a US or European employer, your child's holidays may not align with your own work holidays. The December break is the Southern Hemisphere summer. That means your child is off during the hottest, longest days: on the December solstice (21 December 2026), Cape Town gets 14 hours 25 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 05:31 and sunset at 19:56. You may need to arrange childcare during your own work week. Plan for that.
If you are moving to Cape Town from the Northern Hemisphere mid-year, note that Term 3 starts in mid-July, not September. Your child may need to join a class that is already halfway through the academic year.
