Both cities run on South Africa Standard Time (SAST)
The IANA zone for the entire country is Africa/Johannesburg. The offset is UTC+2, fixed. No adjustments. Ever. When it is 12:00 in Cape Town, it is 12:00 in Johannesburg. Every day. No exceptions.
Johannesburg is the reference city in the IANA database, but the zone applies nationwide. South Africa spans roughly 1,600 kilometres east to west and uses a single time zone for its whole territory.
No daylight saving time in either city
South Africa does not observe daylight saving time. A brief trial ran from 1 November 1979 to 15 March 1980. It met strong opposition from the agricultural sector and rural communities and was abolished permanently. Clocks have not changed since. No serious legislative proposals exist to bring DST back.
Cape Town and Johannesburg never drift apart. When the UK shifts to British Summer Time, the gap between London and both cities changes. When New York moves to Eastern Daylight Time, the gap changes. The gap between Cape Town and Johannesburg stays at zero.
Why do people ask if Cape Town and Johannesburg share a time zone?
Three reasons:
-
Geography assumption. Cape Town sits on the southwest coast. Johannesburg is inland, about 1,400 kilometres northeast. People used to the United States or Australia, where a similar distance crosses multiple zones, assume South Africa must work the same way. It does not.
-
The name "Africa/Johannesburg". The IANA zone name makes it look like Johannesburg is the only city in that zone. It is not. The name is a reference point, not a boundary.
-
Historical confusion. Before 1 March 1903, Cape Town used Cape Mean Time (UTC+1:30), based on its local longitude of 18.4°E. Johannesburg used a different local mean time. The country unified under UTC+2 on that date and has not changed since.
Scheduling a call between Cape Town and Johannesburg
Pick any time. A 10:00 meeting in Cape Town is a 10:00 meeting in Johannesburg. No mental arithmetic.
- Flights: A flight departing Cape Town at 14:00 arrives in Johannesburg at the local time printed on your ticket. No conversion.
- Live events: A 20:00 concert in Johannesburg streams at 20:00 in Cape Town.
- Business hours: Banks open at 09:00 in both cities. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) opens at 09:00 SAST. Traders in Cape Town see the same opening bell.
- Government offices: Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:30 in both cities.
The real time differences to check
If you are coordinating with someone outside South Africa, the useful question is not Cape Town vs Johannesburg. It is SAST vs your time zone.
Here is how Cape Town (and Johannesburg) relate to major cities on two dates. The differences shift because the other city observes DST, not because Cape Town does.
15 January 2026 (Cape Town summer, Northern Hemisphere winter) - New York: 7 hours behind - London: 2 hours behind - Paris: 1 hour behind - Dubai: 2 hours ahead - Mumbai: 3.5 hours ahead - Singapore: 6 hours ahead - Sydney: 9 hours ahead
15 July 2026 (Cape Town winter, Northern Hemisphere summer) - New York: 6 hours behind - London: 1 hour behind - Paris: same time - Dubai: 2 hours ahead - Mumbai: 3.5 hours ahead - Singapore: 6 hours ahead - Sydney: 8 hours ahead
New York shifts by 1 hour between January and July. That is New York moving to EDT. Cape Town does not move.
Paris goes from 1 hour behind in January to the same time in July. That is Paris shifting to CEST. Cape Town does not move.
Sydney goes from 9 hours ahead to 8 hours ahead. That is Sydney leaving its DST period. Cape Town does not move.
Do Durban, Pretoria or other South African cities use a different zone?
No. Durban, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit, Polokwane, Kimberley: all of them run on Africa/Johannesburg. All of them are UTC+2, year-round.
There is no second time zone. The country's longitude spread is compact enough that a single zone works without extreme sunrise or sunset times at the edges.
