What time zone does South Africa use?

Every clock in the country reads the same: South Africa Standard Time (SAST). The offset is UTC+2, fixed. The IANA time zone database identifies it as Africa/Johannesburg, a single identifier that covers Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and everywhere in between.

South Africa does not observe daylight saving time. The last experiment ended in 1980. Agricultural opposition killed it, and the offset has stayed at UTC+2 ever since.

One country, one time zone

The country spans roughly 1,600 kilometres west to east. No internal time zone border has ever been drawn. Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and Gqeberha all share the same clock.

Sunrise and sunset times vary noticeably across that distance. Cape Town (33.9°S) sits further west, so the sun rises and sets later than in Durban. On the June solstice (21 June 2026), Cape Town sunrise is at 07:50 and sunset at 17:44, giving 9 hours 53 minutes of daylight. The clock, though, reads the same in both cities.

How SAST compares to other time zones

The gap between South Africa and the rest of the world shifts twice a year. South Africa does not move. Countries that observe DST do. Here are the differences on 15 January 2026, when Europe and North America are on standard time:

Location Difference from SAST
London 2 hours behind
Paris 1 hour behind
Dubai 2 hours ahead
Mumbai 3.5 hours ahead
Singapore 6 hours ahead
Tokyo 7 hours ahead
New York 7 hours behind
Chicago 8 hours behind
Los Angeles 10 hours behind
Sydney 9 hours ahead
São Paulo 5 hours behind

On 15 July 2026, DST is active in Europe and North America. The gaps shrink:

Location Difference from SAST
London 1 hour behind
Paris Same time
Dubai 2 hours ahead
Mumbai 3.5 hours ahead
Singapore 6 hours ahead
Tokyo 7 hours ahead
New York 6 hours behind
Chicago 7 hours behind
Los Angeles 9 hours behind
Sydney 8 hours ahead
São Paulo 5 hours behind

Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, Tokyo and São Paulo stay constant all year. None of them observe DST.

What this means for your schedule

Calling or meeting someone in South Africa:

  • From the UK: 10:00-16:00 SAST gives you 08:00-14:00 GMT (09:00-15:00 BST).
  • From Western Europe: 09:00-15:00 SAST gives 08:00/09:00-14:00/15:00 CET/CEST.
  • From the US East Coast: 14:00-17:00 SAST gives 07:00-10:00 EST (08:00-11:00 EDT).
  • From the US West Coast: Overlap is tight. 16:00-17:00 SAST is 06:00-07:00 PST (07:00-08:00 PDT). One usable hour.

Remote workers serving European clients get an easy overlap. Serving US West Coast clients means early starts or late finishes. There is no long window.
